Gypsies

Today we walked. Uphill to a Chatelard Castle, downhill through back streets and fields and uphill again to the ritzy part of town (around Chateau de Cretes). We stopped for a feed at L’Harmonie cafe. The grey hair and umbrella stand full of walking sticks suggested pensioner’s cheap Tuesday. Half price – bargain. It was nice to disappear amongst a bunch of locals and rest our legs. As seems to be the pattern here, the morning cloud and rain gave way to brilliant sunshine by early afternoon. The walk back along the lakeside from Vevey was stunning. We enjoyed five minutes of sunset on our gorgeous little deck before it rained again! In the evening, we strolled up to the old town to Le Museum Restaurant for Rosti and Grilled meat (beef turkey, and horse). Once you get over the murder of Black Beauty, the meat is divine. The restaurant is all stone arches and timber beams and, over an apricot schnapps, our waitress tells us of her dreams to convert the place back to a regular jazz venue (as it had once been during early Montreaux jazz festivals). Her passion had been buoyed by the arrival of the Gypsy kings one evening who, once she’d given them a guitar and demanded they prove they really were the ‘Gypsy’s’, agreed that the venue was awesome and they’d definitely come back and play there. We feel a close connection with the band now by virtue of having sat in the same seats! Late, going to bed. London tomorrow.
